Tests of adrenal cortical function and their place in the diagnosis of adrenal cortical disease.

Tremendous advances have taken place in our understanding of the function of the adrenal glands in health and in disease. In the last decade biochemists have isolated and synthesized numerous hormones secreted by the cortex, while clinical endocrinologists have applied this knowledge in elucidating the various syndromes associated with adrenal disease. Tests of adrenal function tend to be based...

Assessment of adrenal cortical function after death in cases of senile osteoporosis.

Adrenal cortical function was assessed after death by indirect methods in an unselected series of 31 cases dying in hospital, and comparison made between cases showing normal bone density and those showing unequivocal senile osteoporosis. The osteoporotic cases showed evidence of slightly greater cortical activity than did cases with normal bone density but this was considered to be largely due...

Adrenal cortical function in children on steroids.

function was assessed in 20 children receiving 2-5 to 10 mg. prednisolone daily, by measuring plasma cortisol levels before and after the administration of the synthetic polypeptide fl'-24, tetracosactrin (Synacthen). 18 of the children were asthmatics, one had nephrosis, and one had dermatomyositis. Adrenal function was classified as (a) abnormal response to tetracosactrin, where basal plasma ...

The response of urinary 17-hydroxycorticoids to corticotrophin zinc as a test of adrenal cortical function.

An increased interest in the study of the adrenal cortex, together with the ready availability of corticotrophin (A.C.T.H.), have, in recent years, led to the development of improved methods for the assessment of adrenal cortical function. The first of such methods was devised by Thorn, Forsham, Prunty, and Hills (1948) and depended upon the fall in blood eosinop'lils after injection of a singl...

The effect of corticotrophin zinc on plasma 17-hydroxycorticoids as a test of adrenal cortical function.

The response of plasma 17-hydroxycorticoids to corticotrophin has been determined using a simplified technique. Steroid levels appeared to be maximal four hours after the injection of 40 units of corticotrophin zinc. No response was obtained in cases of Addison's disease and a sluggish increase occurred in hypopituitarism. The effect of steroid therapy is discussed.
